Visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. We welcome you to visit with your child in his or her room, but we also have two visiting rooms near the main entrance. The library includes a flat-screen television with DVD player, cable television, books, tables and comfortable chairs. The second visiting room also is equipped with a flat-screen television and DVD player, cable television, mini refrigerator, microwave and comfortable chairs. Movies are available and can be checked in/out with the receptionist at the front desk.
We have a webcam families can use for virtual visits with your child or young adult as well as for attending meetings remotely. We also have an informational bulletin board for families to keep you informed of events both here and in the community, and we have e-mail and a toll-free number, (800) 237-6555, to make it easy to keep in touch. Plus, to stay up to date about what’s happening at St. Mary’s, be sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter (@StMarysHome), watch our YouTube channel and sign up for our email newsletter by contacting Sonja Barisic, marketing communications manager, at (757) 622-2208 ext. 331 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our Parent Support Group, made up of parents and legal guardians who have children living at St. Mary’s, typically meets monthly on the second Saturday and hosts a private website for families that was developed to help parents and guardians communicate and support each other. The website offers an e-mail discussion list, meeting minutes, videos and material from presentations held at St. Mary’s.
Our staff development department provides parent training to help make families and legal guardians comfortable with caring for your child when you take him or her home for visits. We require appropriate training for parents/guardians/family members, which includes completion of a car-seat clinic through Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and a CPR course.
We have arrangements with a hotel near St. Mary’s that has a reduced rate for families, as well as with The Ronald McDonald House near Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in downtown Norfolk.
Transportation and Field Trips
Handi-Ride is available for families who wish to have a handicapped van to go to places locally for a nominal charge. Families are encouraged to participate in field trips, such as meeting your child for a lunch date or going to a movie or event. We also have Family Fun Nights, Girl Scouts and Boys and Girls Clubs at the Home, as well as prom for older residents.
