Nursing and Medical Care

Our nursing staff provide professional, 24-hour clinical care for your child or young adult, seven days a week. Daily care is delivered by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, direct support professionals and physical and occupational therapists who work under the direction of a board-certified pediatrician who comes to St. Mary’s at least once a week. Nurses stay in close touch with physicians about your child or young adult, and physicians meet frequently with families or provide phone consultations.

Nursing is a vital component of the children’s clinical care. We have more than 100 positions for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and direct support professionals. Each of the four living areas for our children and young adults is equipped with a nurses’ station.

Each child receives routine examinations from a pediatrician to evaluate his or her medical needs. A pediatrician is always on call for our residents and nearly 20 specialists from Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and Eastern Virginia Medical School routinely come to the Home to see the children and young adults. Their specialties include auditory, dental, dermatology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), gastroenterology, gynecology, neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pulmonary and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

An appointment team schedules appointments and takes children and young adults to and from doctor’s appointments outside St. Mary’s.
