Norfolk, VA (August 2022)– The Home is pleased to announce two changes to the Residential Services Team. We welcomed Jan Nelson, former Program Manager, as the new Residential Services Program Development Manager.

Jan Nelson, Norfolk, VA

Jan says “I am looking forward to using all the knowledge I’ve gained as a Program Manager for the past 5 years to further strengthen and expand residential program opportunities. I’m also excited to work more closely with community services providers, so they are aware of all the amazing things we do here at St. Mary’s Home to ensure that everybody we support has a good life.”

Jan Nelson has a B.S. in Psychology from the College of William and Mary, an M.S. in Psychology from Old Dominion University, and an M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Widener University. In her doctoral program, she completed specializations in School Psychology and Neuropsychology. She was a certified School Psychologist in Pennsylvania prior to moving back to Virginia in 1997. Jan is a certified Person-Centered Thinking Trainer, Coach, and Coaches Trainer. She has been working with adults and children with intellectual disabilities for 25 years.

Kimberley Bierce, Norfolk, VA

We are also pleased to announce that Kim Bierce, M.A., former Support Coordinator for Unit 2, has become Program Manager over Units 2 and 3.

“St. Mary’s mission is the reason I came to work for the Home. I’m excited to continue setting high expectations for not only the staff but the people who live here as well so that they can truly live a good life.”

Kim Bierce has a bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University. She has 14 years of experience working with people with intellectual disabilities. She is also a certified Person-Centered Thinking Trainer and Coach.

About these changes, Shannon Edsall, Director of Residential Services, says “Kim is a dynamic and engaging leader, and we are excited to see the residents and our team members flourish under her leadership.”

She adds, “Jan Nelson, is the perfect person to work on large-scale projects, workflow enhancements, and explore more ways to meet needs within the community. Jan’s vast knowledge of providing support to individuals with different abilities was the driving force behind this transition and we look forward to seeing Jan lead these initiatives.”

The Home extends its congratulations to two amazing and dedicated team members as they transition into these new roles. These changes will allow us to continue to give a good life to young people with complex disabilities.
