Thanks to the Recreational Therapy Department, residents of St. Mary’s Home have launched an after-school newspaper club. Their publication is called “The Home Team Herald.”
Each week, they brainstorm topics to include in their newspaper like activities happening around the Home, upcoming birthdays, and staff and residents to interview.
On November 15th, for National Philanthropy Day, Mateo and Josh interviewed Philanthropy and Content Specialist, Abby Gray. With the help of Recreational Therapy Team members, Cara Gough CTRS and Memuri Domingue CTRS, they used adapted switches to ask the following questions.
Q: What made you choose philanthropy?
A: I really enjoy helping people and that’s what philanthropy is all about. It wasn’t me who chose philanthropy, rather philanthropy chose me.
Q: What does all the money you raise go towards?
A: It all goes towards things that happen in and for the Home – field trips, special events, things for staff, and more!
Q: What is your favorite thing the Home has been able to buy with fundraised money?
A: Definitely, the sensory gym in classroom 5! It’s such a cool space for the residents to enjoy.
Q: What is your favorite way to raise money?
A: The newsletter full of pictures and stories is one of my favorites.
Q: Is it stressful to raise so much money?
A: Not at all! Kathy and I are such a dream team. People are so generous and always want to support the Home.
Q: What event raises the most money?
A: The golf tournament. This year’s tournament raised $60,000!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A: Philanthropy is all about generosity, caring, and making the world a better place. People get so excited to hear about the amazing things we’re able to do at St. Mary’s, and it’s all thanks to the individuals, foundations, and businesses who support us.
Shout out to the Newspaper Club for keeping us updated on the events happening at the Home!
