Local Friends help make St. Mary’s strong

St. Mary’s has strong partnerships with organizations that want to support the Home. A diverse group of people give their time, talent and money to make a difference in the lives of the children and young adults who live here. For information on how you can help, please contact Kristen Nelson, giving manager, at (757) 622-2208, (800) 237-6555 or knelson@shmdc.org.

Virginia Opera 2012

Virginia Opera brings the sound of music to St. Mary’s

Members of the Virginia Opera’s Emerging Artists program performed “Little Red” at St. Mary’s in February 2012, and then toured the Home to meet with some of the children and even sing a bit of a cappella. The performance was made possible by Earl McLain and Wells Fargo The Private Bank.

St. Mary’s is proud to be a United Way partner agency

St. Mary’s Home is proud to have been a certified agency and community partner of United Way since its inception in our Hampton Roads community. Not only do we rely heavily on their generous funding year after year, but we also welcome their volunteers each September through their Day of Caring project. In 2011, St. Mary’s was recognized as the Agency Partner of the Year because of exceptional participation by St. Mary’s employees in the United Way campaign.

TEAM Hoyt VB: running for a reason

Formed in 2008, Team Hoyt VB includes more than 200 runners and 80 riders with special needs. A local offshoot of the national father-and-son pair of Dick and Rick Hoyt from Massachusetts, Team Hoyt VB has partnered with St. Mary’s from the beginning, from pushing our residents in running events to financially supporting our mission. In 2011, two St. Mary’s residents joined Team Hoyt VB to visit the Hoyt family and participate in a 5K in Holland, Mass.

Jenna Crumley

Kids help kids through activities and awareness

Jenna Crumley was just 9 years old when she formed Kid2Kid in 2010 to reach out to the children of St. Mary’s and grow public awareness about the Home. Volunteers create and sell uniquely decorated items like “duct-tape couture” wallets and other accessories. The group now includes about 40 boys and girls and includes some siblings, parents and grandparents. With a presence at the Virginia Beach Art Market and events such as the Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show, Kid2Kid shares St. Mary’s mission through the eyes of young people. In 2012, Jenna was recognized by VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads with an achievement award in the individual youth volunteers category. Congratulations, Jenna.
