Family Services

Hospitality

Visiting hours are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. We welcome you to visit with your child in his or her room. We also have two visiting rooms near the main entrance. The library includes a flat-screen television with DVD player, cable television, books, tables and comfortable chairs. The second visiting room also is equipped with a flat-screen television and DVD player, cable television, mini refrigerator, microwave and comfortable chairs. Movies are available and can be checked in/out with the receptionist at the front desk.

Communication

We have a meeting room webcam families can use for virtual visits with their child or young adult as well as remote participation in meetings. We also have an informational bulletin board for families and a parent email list to keep you informed of events both here and in the community, and we have e-mail and a toll-free number, (800) 237-6555, to make it easy to keep in touch. Plus, to stay up to date about what’s happening at St. Mary’s, be sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram or watch our YouTube channel and sign up for our email newsletter below.

Care Training

Training can be provided to help make families and legal guardians comfortable with caring for their child or young adult during home visits. Please contact Director of Social Work Christine Parker, MSW, if interested at (757) 622-2208 ext. 1044 or cparker@smhdc.org

Clothing Needs

The sewing department — “Virginia’s largest closet” — cares for the children’s clothing to keep the children comfortable and fashionable. Our seamstress labels all of your child’s clothes with his or her name and adapts items to your child’s needs. We provide specially designed socks suited for therapy purposes. Laundry service also is provided.

Accommodations

We have arrangements with a hotel near St. Mary’s that has a reduced rate for families, as well as with The Ronald McDonald House near Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in downtown Norfolk.

Transportation and Field Trips

Handi-Ride is available for families who wish to have a handicapped van to go to places locally for a nominal charge. Families are encouraged to participate in field trips, such as meeting your child for a lunch date or going to a movie or event. We also have events for families to enjoy with their child or young adult such as family nights and seasonal festivals.
